Off-Campus Studies are Essential
at Greenway School
Frequent
off-campus studies are an integral part of the Connected Curriculum at Greenway
School. All school-wide trips are during regular school hours on a
privately reserved Knox County school bus. Students engage in classroom
activities related to the off-campus learning experience whenever
applicable.
There
are several
objectives for the off-campus program:
Off-campus experiences allow students to learn about their community
through immediate observation. Greenway students not only read about a specific place, they
also go see it for themselves and ask questions about it.
Service learning projects at Beaumont Magnet Elementary School
extended through 6 visits one year. Relationships, and deeper
understandings developed through 6 visits with Atria Westin Assisted
Living Center residents during another year.
Blow-dart practice
with a Great Smoky Mountains National Park Ranger.
Whether traveling to a museum, a
laboratory, a performance or an office, the students see many different adults doing many different types of work. Through off-campus
visits, Greenway students gain insight about possible careers.
Off-campus trips give the Greenway students the opportunity to see
that learning is a life-long process and does not occur just within the walls of a
classroom.
Greenway students see this behavior modeled frequently as they observe their English
teacher learning about fossils or their Science teacher discussing a Shakespeare play.
Parents are always welcome to join us for their own "continuing
education."
Each off-campus excursion has a specific educational objective.
